Great question! Viscose is a natural fiber made from wood pulp—think pine and beech trees from European forests. The wood pulp is treated to extract cellulose, which is then spun into yarn. But here's the thing: regular viscose has a bit of a bad reputation when it comes to environmental impact. That's where LENZING™ ECOVERO™ comes in— it's a total game-changer.
ECOVERO™ is produced by Lenzing™ AG, an Austrian company that's basically the gold standard for sustainable textile production. Here's what makes it special:
Sustainably Sourced: The wood comes exclusively from sustainably managed forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). Closed-Loop Production: This is where it gets cool. Traditional viscose production uses chemicals which can be harmful if released into the environment. According to Lenzing, ECOVERO™ is made using a "closed-loop" process, meaning the chemicals are recovered, converted, and returned to the production process as raw materials. This means these chemicals are not released into the environment.
Renewable Energy: Lenzing™ often powers production with solar and renewable energy, so the carbon footprint stays low.
